Mockingbirds in ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’

Scout is depicted as a mockingbird in harper lee’s book. Her innocence leads her under that label, as well as her way with words as shown very early on in the book, representing mockingbirds singing.

  1. Hi Thomas

We discussed in class how the symbol of a mockingbird is used to show how a person loses their innocence or has their innocence attacked through their contact with evil in the novel. For example Jem can be seen to lose his innocence when he understands that Boo Radley is still being punished for something he did a long time ago. The knot hole in the tree is filled up with cement and Boo can no longer communicate with the children. Jem sees how Nathan Radley is a cruel person for doing this to his brother and it makes him cry. His innocence has been crushed as he begins to see the cruelty in the world.

Can you try and explain to me how you think Scout (or choose another character) has their innocence attacked?
